It must say to your customers "I'm trustworthy!
I'm reliable! I'm professional! You can spend money with
me, and you'll receive what you asked for!" People's
primary cue for that reaction is the way the site looks, the
clarity of the writing, and freedom from typos and spelling
mistakes.
It mustn't leave people tapping their fingers.. Sites must
load quickly (within the boundaries determined by your target
audience), which means sensible design but also fast reliable
hosting.
Site must use appropriate technology. For instance,
use flash to add visual flair or applications to
your website, but don't have an entirely flash-based site
if your
business will rely on search engine placement. Don't try
and sell aesthetic items using small or highly compressed
images
etc..
Site must be usable. The user must be able
to find their way around, especially if you are selling products
- they've got to find them easily. The less
stressful the user experience the more likely they are to
return.
Site must be findable! Most of your customers will
rely on search engines to find your site. You must have a
good position to get traffic. Your site must be optimised
for search engines, submitted to them and promoted in the
appropriate places.
